Bungamati, a historic Newar village located just south of Patan in Lalitpur District, Nepal, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and traditional lifestyle. Believed to have origins dating back to the Licchavi period, the village was historically known as Bugayumigrama and later as Bungapattan during the Malla era . Bungamati is intimately connected with the deity Rato Machhindranath (Bungadya), whose temple stands at the village center. The deity resides here for six months each year before being moved to Patan, a transition marked by the grand Rato Machhindranath Jatra, a significant chariot festival . The village is also home to other important religious sites, including the Karya Binayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, and the Hayagriva Bhairav Temple, honoring the local guardian deity . Bungamati is celebrated for its master woodcarvers, with many families engaged in this traditional craft for generations . Despite suffering extensive damage during the 2015 earthquake, the community has been actively involved in restoration efforts, aiming to preserve its architectural and cultural legacy .
